If you are sitting in your office late at night, and the lights blink, what would you do if you discovered that everyone had disappeared? Even the girl that suddenly appeared in the library on your way home.

Glen just wanted to get home, in any way possible. Even if the cars - any car - didn't work. And the sky looked strange and it never got dark. And there was no noise from any living creature - even bugs - except a very low-pitched humming sound.

On the trip home, he sees several ravens - not a sign of good luck. A group of ravens is called a 'murder'.

Then he discovers he is in an alternate and parallel world, with the prospect of even that world disappearing. The only help he can get seems to come from the dog that he found on the way home.

Who tells him that only he can fix things back to normal.

Book One of a three-book series.

From the Author

What prompted the story? It was actually a real experience, just as it was in the book. I was working at my office late one night before a three-day weekend. Everyone else had left early, but I had to do some maintenance on the network - it's best to do that when nobody is around. And the office lights blinked. I thought it was someone turning out the lights - not knowing there was anyone else in the office. So I poked my head out of my office door, yelled "Still here!" and got no response. Nobody in the office anywhere. For some reason, that was a bit disconcerting. And spooky. (I had actually watched a horror movie the night before.) And I decided to leave 'right now'.Then what happened?Nothing abnormal. Except my imagination thinking about the situation. Which eventually - and that took a long time - getting me to the premise of the book.Which is?What if everyone disappeared? People, animals, insects, etc., but the rest of the world was still there. Mechanical things didn't work (cars), but electricity did work. I'd want to get home. But the car wouldn't work. What would I do next?Apocalyptic fiction? It started out that way. But everyone was doing that. And I'd watched some survival shows on TV, so some of that made it's way into the story. And the 'bad guys'?Every story needs bad guys. But there was only our protagonist around - nobody else. When I am at home, I sit in my living room, laptop in my lap, with large windows looking out over Puget Sound (WA state). Lots of tall pine trees. The occasional eagle. But often bunches of crows. Who are called a 'murder'. They seemed like troublemakers. Why Book One?The story started getting too long for a single book. And the book's ending was still out of reach. So I edited the story to provide a cliff-hanger that seemed to be reasonable. There was a 'good guy', and 'bad guys', and 'good guy helpers'.
All I need to do is to get the story finished. That's what Book Two will do. In the meantime, Book One is out there. You might like it - I hope so. It was fun (overall) to write. And I need to get back to Book Two.

I'm just a computer geek, mostly. I create and maintain web sites, mostly for fun. And I decided to be a writer.

My latest books are a new thriller series - "The RV Vigilante". The first three books are now available: "The RV Redemption', "the Dive Bar Redemption", and "The Hiker's Redemption". All three books are available in ebook and paperback formats. And I'm working on the fourth book.

These stories are about a retired veteran traveling the US in his RV. He likes to travel alone, but he meets people that need his help because they aren't getting help from traditional sources. Max Smith - that's his current ID - is glad to help. Sometimes that help requires a bit of justifiable force.

I've written several other books. The first was "Digital Choke". Then the "Light Blink" trilogy (see below). One of the latest is "The Forgotten Winchester" - based on the Winchester 73 rifle found in the Nevada desert leaning against a Utah juniper pine tree - and discovered about 130 years after it was left there. More info about that (and all books) at my author site - it's my full name plus the 'dot com'. I'm also on Facebook as "Richard Hellewell - Author".

In the meantime, I still am a geek. Web sites, and programming. And writing. And gazing out at the Puget Sound, somewhere opposite Mutiny Bay WA.

I think you will enjoy the book series. And take a look at my Classic Westerns - "Rocky's Treasure", and the "The Forgotten Winchester". Plus a techno-thriller - "Digital Choke". You can find them here on Amazon, or look at my author site.

Book number one of proposed two book fantasy series. I read the well printed and bound POD (print on demand) trade paperback. I will read the second book when it is released.

Rick presents a well written and tight fantasy about a man's existence changing from billions of inhabitants to one inhabitant, him. And then a couple of other characters show up but nothing of significance. The sun does not rise nor does it set. Cars do not work anymore but water still flows from the pipes. Distances are weird and not consistent with before the event. The book ends on a cliff hanger that is a little weak but gets the job done.

Please note that Rick asked for people to read and review his book in a group that we are members of. It is his first book that I know of. I paid for my copy of his book and was not paid for my review. Rick says that his second book is about a quarter complete.

Likeable protagonist, who is beset by alarming and inexplicable events, and responds with the thoughtfulness and planning of a modern-day McGyver. He relates his own observations and movements in a meticulous, sometimes wry, manner.
The narrative keeps the reader engaged, as the story slowly expands. With the appearance of each new character, the window to the mystery widens, then narrows again as things change from what they had seemed to be. Curiouser and curiouser!
Science fiction is not usually my genre, but I eventually lowered my eyebrow as my interest was piqued. I recommend that you check it out for yourself!
